Our Original Nameplate Marking Machine

With 90 years of engineering and history behind it, the Model 4 has become a popular solution for nameplate marking. It’s easy to use, versatile, and built to last — we regularly get orders for character dials for Model 4s that are over 20 years old. If you need a marking solution for nameplates, tags, and similar parts, you can see the Model 4 in action and learn more about it on our nameplate marking machine page and in our online store.

Our earliest nameplate marking machine was first manufactured and sold in the 1930s. Known as a “Name Plate Detail Press,” it was designed to make fine, detailed characters when heavier duty marking tools could not.

A Better Nameplate Marking Solution

At the time, companies were using handstamps to mark nameplates, often resulting in damaged plates and illegible marks. With the Name Plate Detail Press, manufacturers were able to quickly and easily make marks that were not only legible but uniform as well. They were available with different character sizes (1/16”, 3/32”, and 1/8”) and marked plates up to 4” x 8”.

Using the Name Plate Detail Press was simple. A dial was turned to the desired character and a lever was pulled to press that character into the nameplate. The nameplate was then moved over for the next character. This was much easier than trying to line up individual handstamp marks, and it also produced better results.

Our nameplate marking machines have undergone some changes since the 1930’s. For example,  1/4” character sizes are now available and a table slide now moves the nameplate over after every mark for more uniformed spacing. However, the Model 4, our current nameplate marking machine, largely operates the same way as the original Name Plate Detail Press.
