WHAT IS LASER ENGRAVING?
Laser engraving is the removal process of material from a surface through the use of a laser beam resulting in a permanent mark. This process creates a mark with depths usually measured in thousandths and hundredths of an inch, though deeper marks are possible with powerful lasers, repeated marking passes, and longer marking times. The difference between this and other methods of marking is that the material is displaced when it is engraved which gives the marking depth and edges that you can feel.
If the laser engraving only removes the coating of a surface, this is called laser etching. If you are needing deeper laser engravings, these can be achieved with a high-wattage laser. Ideal for parts that will experience a lot of wear or for parts that have been painted or coated, engraving can work in a variety of industries including Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, Firearms, Packaging, Heavy Construction Equipment, and many more that are able to use laser engraving to identify and track their products.
Known as one of the first types of basic laser engraving, this service can be done on any type of surface but is especially best done on metals. This kind of engraving solution is best suited for materials that will go through a lot of wear and tear and need a strong and durable mark that will stand the test of time.
WHAT TYPES OF MATERIAL CAN BE LASER ENGRAVED?
Lasers are capable of engraving metals, plastics, ceramics, glass, and organic materials. The composition of the material being marked will determing the process to reach desired depth.
WHAT TYPE OF LASER SOURCES ARE USED FOR ENGRAVING?
Fiber and YVO4 lasers can engrave on metals, some ceramics, and hardened plastics.
Green and UV lasers are best for semiconductors, silicon, ceramics, glass, and some plastics.
CO2 lasers are best for ceramics, glass, wood, and other organic materials.
WHAT INDUSTRIES OR APPLICATIONS USE LASER ENGRAVING?
Laser engraving can be found in every industry including aerospace, electronics, firearms, oil and gas, heavy construction, and more.
